De Technische Commissie (TC) / The Technical Committee (TC)

Unicum is een vereniging die draaiende wordt gehouden door een grote groep vrijwilligers. Zo’n 90 vrijwilligers werken in diverse commissies mee aan het onderhouden, vernieuwen en organiseren van onze mooie padel- en tennisvereniging. We laten deze commissies aan het woord om beter te laten zien wat zij doen voor de club. Vandaag de technische commissie (TC), een commissie die, in tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden, niets te maken heeft met techniek. En laten we beginnen met een compliment voor deze commissie, die aan het begin van dit jaar voor het komende competitieseizoen zo’n 70 teams met 450 spelers aan het indelen is.

VCL staat voor Verenigings Competitie Leider, een certificaat dat je bij de KNLTB moet halen wil je competities in goede banen leiden. Waar Sebastiaan nog maar sinds de zomer lid is, is Fred dat al 50 jaar en is hij al 27 jaar VCL. Susanne heeft 10 jaar de Unicum Open mee georganiseerd. Marcel is al vanaf het begin (nu bijna 6 jaar geleden) besmet door padel, zit ook in de onderhoudsploeg, padel- en de Onderlinge commissie. Annelies zit sinds 2016 in de TC en sinds 2020 in het bestuur. Kortom een enthousiaste en deskundige commissie, die fysiek dan ook maar 3 keer per jaar bij elkaar hoeft te komen en de rest via App en telefoon regelt. Bij problemen springen ze elkaar bij.

Waar staat de TC voor?

Wij proberen zoveel mogelijk Unicummers te laten tennissen en padellen middels trainingen, toernooien en competities. Daarbij wordt ook rekening gehouden met de mogelijkheid tot vrij spelen. De organisatie van de competities is de grootste taak van de TC. Daarbij zijn we gebonden aan de regels van de KNLTB, die eisen stelt aan de baancapaciteit en starttijden. Dat bepaalt het aantal teams dat we kunnen vormen. Dat is voor padel 20 teams, waaronder dit jaar voor het eerst damesteams. Voor tennis zijn dat (inclusief jeugd) 50 teams. We delen de teams in, regelen de inschrijving en afdracht aan de KNLTB. De druk is hoog rond de inschrijvingen en zodra de competitie van start gaat, is er veel communicatie met de teamcaptains. Daarna loopt het wel en hopen we tijdens de afsluiting veel kampioenen te kunnen huldigen! Verder is de TC ook verantwoordelijk voor het contact met de trainers en met de toernooicommissies (Annelies) en met de Jeugdcommissie (Linda). Heel veel communiceren dus.

Hoe zijn jullie georganiseerd?

Ieder is competitieleider voor een deel van de competitie. De VCL maakt teamopstellingen, de speelschema’s en zorgt dat de teams op tijd de baan op gaan. De speelschema’s zijn best complex, dus je moet er bovenop zitten en wat directief optreden kan helemaal geen kwaad. Soms krijg je op het laatste moment het verzoek van een team om op een andere tijd te starten. Dan moet je de boel omgooien, de tegenstanders bellen etc. Een heel gedoe, zeker wanneer ze daarna bellen omdat ze toch weer op de oude tijd willen spelen…

Wat is er leuk aan deze job?

De terugkoppeling en complimenten van de captains doen je natuurlijk goed. Verder leer je in korte tijd heel veel Unicummers kennen. De competitie afsluiting met etentje, pub quiz en huldiging van de kampioenen is natuurlijk het hoogtepunt.

Verder moet je stevig in je schoenen staan. Soms moet je als scheidsrechter optreden bij onenigheid. Zo was er een keer hooglopende ruzie ontstaan door bellen naast de baan. Soms moet je niet teveel vragen stellen, maar sturen, om niet teveel in discussies terecht te komen. Maar meestal gaat het gewoon heel goed en is het een leuke en dankbare job.

The Technical Committee (TC)

Unicum is a club that is kept running by a large group of volunteers. About 90 volunteers work in various committees to maintain, renew and organize our beautiful padel and tennis club. We let these committees have their say to better show what they do for the club. Today, we’re happy to introduce the technical committee (TC), a committee that unlike its name suggests, has nothing to do with technical stuff. And let's start by complimenting this committee, which at the beginning of this year is fielding some 70 teams with 450 players for the upcoming competition season.

VCL stands for Verenigings Competitie Leider (Club Competition Leader), a certificate that must be obtained from the KNLTB if you want to manage competitions. Whereas Sebastiaan has only been a member since the summer, Fred has been for 50 years and has been VCL for 27 years. Susanne has helped organize the Unicum Open for 10 years. Marcel has been infected by padel since the beginning, almost 6 years ago now, is also in the maintenance team, as well as the padel and the Onderlinge committees. Annelies has been on the TC since 2016 and on the Board since 2020. In short, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable committee, which physically only needs to meet 3 times a year. The rest is arranged via text messages and phone. In case of problems they help each other out.

What does the TC stand for?

We try to let as many members as possible play tennis and padel through training, tournaments and competitions. This also takes into account the possibility of free play. The organisation of the various competitions is the TC's biggest task. We are bound by the rules of the KNLTB, which sets requirements for court capacity and starting times. This determines the number of teams we can allow for. Padel has 20 teams, including ladies’ teams (which this year is a first for us). For tennis (including our youth players) there are 50 teams. We assign the teams, arrange registration and payment to the KNLTB. The pressure is high around the registrations and once the competition starts there is a lot of communication with the team captains. After that, it (mostly) runs smoothly and we hope to honour many champions during the closing ceremony! Furthermore, the TC is also responsible for the contact with the trainers and with the tournament committees (Annelies) as well as with the Youth Committee (Linda). So this task involves a lot of communication!

How are you organized?

Everyone is in charge of part of the competition. The VCL makes team compositions, the game schedules and makes sure the teams get on the court on time. The playing schedules are quite complex, so you have to be on top of things and some directive action doesn't hurt at all. Sometimes you get a last-minute request from a team to start at a different time. Then you have to rearrange things, call the opponents, etc. Quite a hassle, especially when they call afterwards to ask to play at the initial time again…

What is fun about this job?

The feedback and compliments from the captains do you good, of course. Furthermore, you get to know many members in a short time. The closing of the competition with dinner, pub quiz and celebrating the champions is of course the highlight.

Furthermore, you have to be confident in what you do. Sometimes you have to referee disagreements. For example, one time there was a high-flying argument caused by bells next to the court. Sometimes you don't have to ask too many questions, don't get into too much discussion, but rather direct and offer solutions. But usually things just go very well and it's a fun and rewarding job.
